George's Notes
As a breed, tram drivers (or to give them their correct title, motormen) seemed to be some of the cheeriest folk on earth in spite of the rigours of their occupation. They were always whistling and calling out friendly greetings to acquaintances as they plied their open-fronted trams on our roads. In the first twenty-five years of this century, Rochdale had 88 single and double-decker trams in operation.
