Rochdale Corporation Tramways started an electrified system in 1902 and provided a reliable service for the next 30 years. In the mid-twenties Rochdale had 88 tram-cars, consisting of single-decker (combination type) and double-decker. The tramway system was abolished in Rochdale in 1932. Clegg’s Commercial Directory for the year 1916 lists 127 spinning and doubling mills in Rochdale, 23 of them being within 500 yards of Rochdale Town Hall. The same source names 36 coal merchants operating in Rochdale; today [1976] there are 6.
