George's Notes
In many parts of our towns, where back-to-back dwellings were the order and large families predominant, it must have been a sheer hardship for women to do the family washing. No launderettes then, just tubbing, rubbing and dolly-pegging and then competition for a space to hang the washing across the street. A keen lookout had to be maintained for the dustmen, coalmen, sanitary men and others who could be a threat to a washing line and many were the heated exchanges between drivers and housewives in times past.
